A clean utility report cannot rule out lead at your tap

A utility report describes the water system, not every service line, faucet, fixture, or plumbing condition between treatment and your glass. Testing at your tap settles the household question; a product registry becomes useful only after that.

Lead can enter after treatment

EPA explains that lead can enter drinking water when lead-containing plumbing materials corrode. Potential sources include service lines, pipes, faucets, and fixtures. A service line may cross utility and customer responsibility boundaries, which differ by place; local records are needed before assigning ownership.

Lead pipes are more likely in older cities and in homes built before 1986.

This is why a utility report cannot settle the question at one address, and why a system in compliance and a lead result at one tap can coexist. The household answer requires a properly collected sample from the tap in question.

About the 15 ppb figure

The enforceable standard is 15 parts per billion. If more than 10 percent of samples exceed it, water systems must take corrective action. Read it for what it is — a trigger for utility action, not a line below which anyone has declared your water safe.

NSF maintains a free, public, searchable database of products certified for lead reduction. You can look up a brand and model yourself and see whether the certification is real — rather than trusting a box that says “filters lead.”

What that certification actually means

What it establishes

  • The product was tested against a named standard — NSF/ANSI 53 or, for reverse osmosis systems, NSF/ANSI 58.
  • Testing is done at 150 ppb lead, which NSF describes as ten times higher than the EPA’s maximum allowable level.
  • The listing names the exact brand, model, and replacement element — certification attaches to a specific product, not a brand.

What it does not

  • Certification is contaminant-specific. A filter certified for lead is not thereby certified for PFAS, VOCs, nitrates, or anything else.
  • It says nothing about performance past the rated capacity. A certified filter used beyond its replacement interval is not a certified filter.
  • It is not a health claim, and neither is this page. We do not claim any product treats or prevents disease.
  • We have not tested any of these products. Everything here comes from EPA and NSF documentation.

The order that actually works

  1. Find out whether lead is present at the tap. A utility report cannot describe every service line and premise-plumbing condition. Test at your own tap — ask your utility or health department which sampling and certified-lab route applies locally.
  2. If lead is present, look up filters on NSF’s list by model number, not by packaging claims.
  3. Then choose a system that fits your household, budget and plumbing — and keep replacing the filter on schedule, because that is what the certification assumes.
