Field note 01
When rest feels irresponsible
Mark 6:30–32; Exodus 20:8–10
- In context
- In Mark, Jesus addresses apostles returning from demanding ministry and calls them away to rest. In Exodus, Sabbath belongs to a covenant command that also stops the labor of servants, immigrants, and animals—it is not merely a private productivity technique.
- It does not promise
- These passages do not promise that one quiet hour will resolve burnout, illness, insomnia, depression, or an unsafe workload.
- One practice
- Protect one small period with no output attached to it. If work or caregiving makes that impossible, name the person or system from whom you need concrete help.
