Research note
Estimate what a water filter costs to own
The sticker price is the smaller number, and the one every comparison leads with.
The cost that repeats
A purifier is bought once. Its filters are bought for as long as you own it, and a certification only holds while the filter is inside its rated life. A filter used past its replacement interval is not a certified filter — it is a housing full of spent media.
The current price is whatever the seller quotes today, not a number this article can safely preserve. Copy the unit price and every required replacement-filter price from the seller, then copy the gallon and month limits from the current manual into the calculator below.
Why the calculator starts blank
Prices, packages, and service intervals can change. Blank inputs prevent an old quote from looking current. The estimate also includes a separate VOC carbon-filter row and optional electricity, wastewater, and maintenance fields so omitted costs stay visible.
Editable ownership estimate
Copy the current purchase price, replacement-filter prices, and service intervals from the seller and current manual. The estimate buys whole replacement filters at the earlier of the entered month or gallon limit. The filters included with a new unit are counted in the unit price, not purchased again on day one.
Required replacement filters
Use zero or leave blank only when the current manual says that filter or limit does not apply.

On these numbers the purifier costs $0.00 more over five years. If that is your situation, it is a reason not to buy one.
Reading your own result honestly
If the five-year total comes out higher than what you currently spend, that is a real answer and a reason not to buy. A household drinking a glass or two a day may never recover the purchase price, and no amount of framing changes that.
If it comes out lower, the saving is real but slower than the sticker comparison suggests — because the filters keep arriving.
Either way, cost is the second question. The first is whether you have a contaminant worth filtering at all, and that is answered by a test, not a calculator.
